Earthquake Drills:
Practice at least twice a year with your kids:
Drop under a sturdy desk or table.
Hold on tightly.
Cover your eyes by pressing your face against your arm. If there's no table or desk nearby, sit on the floor against an interior wall away from windows, bookcases, or tall furniture that could fall on you.
Review the warnings on the Prepare page with your children. You cannot stop an earthquake. But you can survive it.
Meet:
Discuss with your family the types of disasters that could occur.
Explain to your kids how to prepare and respond to each type of disaster.
Discuss where to go and what to bring if advised to evacuate.
Practice what you have discussed.
Plan:
Pick two meeting places in case you get separated in a disaster.
A place a safe distance from your home in case of a home fire.
A place outside your neighborhood in case you can’t return home.
Choose an out-of-state friend as a check-in contact for everyone to call.
Learn:
Post emergency telephone numbers by every phone.
Teach children how and when to call 9-1-1, police, fire department, and which radio station to tune to for emergency information.
Learn first aid and CPR. Contact your local American Red Cross chapter for information and training.
Teach all family members how and when to turn off gas, electricity, and water.
