Ages 5-11 | Helping Kids Cope | Ages 14-18

Regressive reactions:
  • Disasters affect kids differently at different ages
  • Competing with younger siblings for attention
  • Failure to perform chores, normal responsibilities
Psychological reactions:
  • Headaches
  • Complaint of vague aches and pains
  • Overeating or loss of appetite
  • Bowel problems
  • Skin disorders
  • Sleep disorders (including too much sleep)
Emotional/behavioral:
  • Loss of interest in peer activities
  • Drop in school performance
  • Disruptive behavior
  • Loss of interest in hobbies and recreation
  • Resistance to authority
  • Increased difficulty relating to siblings and parents
  • Sadness or depression
  • Anti-social behavior (e.g. stealing, lying)
Treat 'em right:
  • Give additional attention and consideration to their feelings.
  • Reassure their ability to concentrate, etc. will return.
  • Temporarily lower expectations for performance at school and home.
  • Encourage them to express feelings verbally and in writing.
  • Provide structured but undemanding responsibilities.
  • Encourage taking part in home or community recovery efforts.
  • Rehearse safety measures for future disasters.
  • Encourage physical activity.
  • Encourage play or contact with friends.
