Disaster Guide: Safe Storage

Previous | Disaster Supply Kit Index | Next

Store the kit in a safe, cool, dry and convenient place known to all in your house. A plastic garbage can with a tight lid is a good solution for the basics.

Be realistic. It's not ALL going to fit in one place. Keep a smaller version of your Disaster Supply Kit in the trunk of your car.

  • Seal items, or groups of items, in water-proof and air tight plastic bags.
  • Change the water supply every six months so it stays fresh.
  • Rotate the food every six months.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the proper procedure for storing prescription medications.
  • Replace your batteries BEFORE they expire.
