Sierra Foothills: Northern California's Other Wine Country Michael Ohlsson
While Napa and Sonoma steal the spotlight and bring in the tourists, Northern Californians head to the Sierra Foothills for a wine country without the crowds and pretentions.
The Gold Rush sparked the wine business in the region, and in 1870 over 100 wineries operated in the Sierra Foothills, more than Napa and Sonoma combined at the time.
Calaveras and Amador counties have a rich selection of wineries large and small, spanning many styles. Calaveras wine country is centered in Murphys, an historic Gold Country town on Highway 4. About two hours from the Bay Area, Murphys makes a nice stop along the road up to the high Sierras.
