Bay Area Wildlife: Point Reyes
There perhaps is no better place in the Bay Area to observe wildlife than scenic Point Reyes.
Whether it's hiking through the Tule Elk Reserve toward Tomales Point or watching for gray whales along Point Reyes Beach, the Point Reyes National Seashore is the premiere spot to see wildlife.
The Tule Elk, Point Reyes' primary attraction, are there year round. But they are especially active in the fall during the cool mornings of their mating season.
The 10-mile Point Reyes peninsula is one of the best land-based sites for whale watching in the continent. The southern migration peaks in mid January. The northern migration starts in mid March. In late April and early May, mothers and calves can be seen close to shore.
Besides elk and whales, Point Reyes is home to a plethora of deer, rare birds and wild flowers. Stop by the Bear Valley Visitors Center or other check points around the preserve for more details.
