If you're willing to trek off the main road and brave the altitude, Highland Lakes is another favorite camping spot. It's a half hour drive on a bumpy dirt road, but worth the trip -- two serene lakes set in a meadow of wildflowers, you're just below the tree line. From here, several short hikes take you to unforgettable views and a smattering of color from wildflowers and lichen.
