Mosquito Lakes, Pacific Valley

Further up Highway 4, idyllic Mosquito Lakes is the perfect setting for some lazy fishing and easy camping at 8,70-- ft. Just past the lakes, the road twists down a few hundred feet to Pacific Valley. The Pacific Valley campground used to be a family secret, but as the ranger warned me last summer, it's been "discovered." Set between two steep mountains, the valley is like a tiny, desserted Yosemite with cattle bells echoing through the country. But this country is not for the casual camper. Pack in (and out) your water and supplies, and expect to get dirty.
