Lake Alpine: Mellow recreation spot

Just before Lake Alpine, Highway 4 narrows to a one-lane road, barely wide enough to allow passing vehicles -- large RV's not recommended. Lake Alpine is the last outpost of civilization before crossing the pass and going down the hill to Markleeville and Nevada. The lake is surrounded by granite and great green trees, a popular spot for fishing and quiet boating -- the 10-mile-an-hour speed limit keeps the lake quiet -- no water skis. Rent a kayak at the dock and row out to one of the granite islands for a picnic and a swim. Or choose from several area hikes -- the Inspiration Point point hike is a must, starting at the lake, up a hill for the awesome 360 panorama that gives it its name (hike not recommended for small children).
