California's Highway 4: Sierra Foothills to Ebbett's Pass

image There are seven passes over the mighty Sierra Nevada mountains. Highway 80 is open year-round and makes a quick trip over to Tahoe. Tioga Pass takes many visitors through Yosemite to Mono Lake. But Highway 4's Ebbett's Pass is a bit more off the beaten path, despite the stunning beauty and variety of attractions.

Beginning in the eastern Bay Area and stretching across the San Joaquin Valley through Stockton up to Gold Country, then up through the high Sierras, Highway 4 takes travelers from sea level to 8,731 feet at its summit.
