Windsurfing: Tips and Tricks

The Waterstart

by Dean Karnazes, BayInsider Windsurfing

Learning to waterstart is a critical juncture in your development as a windsurfer. But mastering the waterstart can be difficult and confusing.

Here are some tips:

Try wearing a PFD (protective flotation device) or life jacket when you first try waterstarting. The added buoyancy will greatly assist you in lifting the sail out of the water.

Do not use a sail with camber inducers when learning to waterstart. The sleeve will fill with water making the sail difficult to lift and cumbersome.

Step Two
Step Three
Try taping a piece of foam or other flotation material to the tip of the mast. This will prevent the sail from going under the water too deeply. Thus, you can concentrate on technique rather than using all your effort just to lift the sail up out of the water.

Use the tail of the board to rest the boom upon. Once in this position you can more easily rotate the board into the proper waterstarting direction (across the wind).

Place your front foot on the board first. The most common problem encountered when learning to waterstart is that the board rotates into the wind. You can prevent this by putting your front foot on the board first and steering the nose of the board down wind.

At first, learning to waterstart may seem like an impossible task. But use these tips to help overcome any obstacles you may be encountering. Once you learn how to waterstart, your windsurfing skills will develop at a more rapid rate. And as challenging and frustrating as learning to waterstart may seem, remember to have fun!
