Dean Karnazes on the Bay Area Spot Check

Spot Check

by Dean Karnazes, BayInsider Windsurfing

Within this geographical area are miles of coastline, numerous lakes, the Sacramento Delta, and even a few holding ponds that get quite windy.

The beauty of the Bay area windsurfing scene is that there are literally hundreds of spots. Access is wonderful and wind is plentiful (just ask anyone who has spent an afternoon at Candlestick Park). And best of all, the wind is free.

The Bay Area windsurfer is as interesting and diverse as the conditions found here. From the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies to fanatical college students, Bay Area windsurfers are an eclectic collection of action seekers. Many think of windsurfing as a predominately male sport. But the Bay Area pays no attention to this stereotype. Not only are there plenty of female sailors on the Bay, many of them rip just as hard as the guys!

If you're from out of town, come and make some time to enjoy the Bay Area windsurfing scene. If you live here, try sampling some different spots in the area. You might just make a worthwhile discovery. And best of all, it's right in your backyard.
