Spot Check:
Bodega Bay
Situated in the midst of the roaring 40’s, Bodega Bay is one windy place. When the springtime northwesterlies start blowing, Bodega Bay can be howling for weeks on end. Yet, because most of the windsurfing takes place inside a protected harbor, the water remains smooth and fast even during the strongest blows.
When it happens
The season usually starts around the middle of March, but it is not unusual to get some really good days as early as February. Bodega Bay sits right in the path of the roaring 40’s, so if the northwesterlies are blowing it’s windy at Bodega. There can be good wind throughout the summer, but conditions become a bit less consistent during the summer months. For those especially adventurous types, Bodega Bay has some exceptional winter sailing during the pre-frontal southerly winds. It can be gusty, and it is definitely cold, but it can also be very good.
What are the conditions like?
Typical conditions are 4.5 to 5.0. It can be 4.0 or even 3.5 during the peak of the spring northwesterlies. The summer is usually lighter, more in the 5.0 to 5.5 range. Most windsurfing is done inside Bodega Harbor. The water remains very flat since there isn’t much fetch for chop to develop. It’s great slalom and speed sailing. And if you want to learn carving jibes, the setup is ideal.
How's the temperature?
Very cold to extremely cold. After several days of strong wind, when upwelling occurs, the water temperatures can dip into the 40’s. Full wetsuit or drysuit required. Booties and a hood are standard, and gloves might even be nice.
Getting there
Bodega Bay can be accessed from either Highway 1 or Highway 101.
