San Mateo - This wide and hilly trail alongside the Crystal Springs Reservoir is popular among families and cyclists. The rolling hills at the beginning of the trail make it excellent for beginning skaters, though it can get hot in the summer months.
Distance:
12 miles
Recommended For:
All levels, touring.
Route:
Head up the east side of the reservoir and wind across the rolling foothills to the west. At about two miles you will encounter a water fountain which is a good spot for beginners to turn around. After this point, the path gets hillier as the route heads north to the south side of San Andreas Lake. The steepest and final climb is worthwhile only for those who can navigate its treacherous descent.
Notes:
Be careful on the way back. The downhill slope encourages fast skating and there are often Park Rangers enforcing the 5mph speed limit.
Directions:
Off I-280, west of San Mateo, take the Highway 92 exit and follow the signs toward Half Moon Bay. Go north until Highway 92 turns west and turn right on Skyline Blvd. (Highway 35) and drive north for two miles. Park in the lot at the Crystal Springs trail sign.
