Golden Gate Park "The Skating Capital of the West"
On Sundays and holidays,Golden Gate Park sees between 5000 and 10,000 skaters roll through. It is the ultimate place for skaters, skateboarders, joggers and cyclists as a 2-mile strip is closed to automobiles, making it a haven for alternative modes of recreation.
Location:
2-mile stretch of John F. Kennedy Drive (from the East side of the park to 19th Ave) and connected streets .
Skaters can find:
Dancing Area. Skaters, music and dancers fill the space at 6th and JFK. The scene can't be missed from Kennedy Drive, as sound systems fill the air with music as both quads and inlines dance and freestyle. Beginners can learn to dance on skates for free. There are concession carts for food and drink.
Slalom Courses. which are located one block East of 6th Avenue and JFK.
Rollerhockey.
A nice skate on good asphalt between the entrances of the Steinhart Aquarium and the De Young Museum. Watch out for museum goers and the occasional tour bus on 8th Ave.
Continuing up to 19th, the rest of Kennedy Drive is smooth terrain with slight hills. Avoid 19th Ave and Highway 1.
GGP Skate Patrol is out between 11:00 and 5:00.
Golden Gate Park on Saturday
On Saturdays in the Park, a 1 mile stretch of Middle Drive West is closed to autos - from 19th Ave., one block South of JFK to Martin Luther King drive.
Daily
Golden Gate Park is always a great place to skate with its miles of paths and endless greenery. One can often find bladers rolling around the 6th Avenue area.
