Description
Guadalupe Canyon Parkway, which bisects San Bruno Mountain, was prominently featured in Bullit's famous citywide chase scene. Drive the scenic road today, and not much has changed, save for the housing developments which have crept up the sides of the mountain. The bulk of San Bruno Mountain is protected parkland, thanks in part to the discovery of several nearly extinct butterflies. Mission Blue, San Bruno Elfin, Bay Checkspot, and Callippe Silverspot butterflies feed on the nectar of some rare San Bruno plants. Although the park is a short distance from San Francisco, there is an abundance of wildlife. The spring wildflower display has to be seen to be believed, and hawks, hummingbirds, and rabbits are common.
The park has a few trailheads. You can begin an out-and-back hike at a parking lot near the summit, or meander through San Bruno's southern section, but to experience the best of the mountain, start at the small parking area on the north side of Guadalupe Canyon Parkway.
