Description
Mount Diablo hosts so many trailheads that when it's time for a hike the choices are overwhelming. Although it's hard to find a bum trail anywhere on the mountain, for the most comfortable hikes, tailor your hike to the season. Winter and early spring might be best spent on Diablo's north face, where waterfalls gush downhill during the wettest months of the year. When spring rolls around, I like the southern slopes of Diablo. With lots of grassland and sunny chaparral, hikes like this one, starting at Curry Point, are great treks for wildflower lovers. When I last hiked here in May the grass had already dried to a crisp, but there were plenty of Mariposa lilies, lupines, and yellow fairy lanterns blooming, as well as shrubs of bright pink chaparral pea and white chamise in bloom. In summer and autumn these trails are sun-baked and hot; you'll probably be happier hiking somewhere with cool breezes and some shade.

Turn-by-turn mileage log

Directions
From Highway 680 in Contra Costa County, exit Diablo Road. Follow the brown parks signs: drive east on Diablo Road, turn right to continue on Diablo Road at El Cerro, then turn left onto Mount Diablo Scenic Boulevard at Blackhawk. Drive north on Mount Diablo Scenic Boulevard, which morphs into South Gate Road at the park boundary. Drive carefully uphill on this narrow road (watch out for bicyclists) to the entrance kiosk. Then continue about 1.5 miles to a broad flat parking lot on the right side of the road (the Curry Point sign is near the start of the trail, but it's the first parking lot past Rock City).
