Description
Mount Diablo hosts so many trailheads that when it's time for a hike the choices are overwhelming. Although it's hard to find a bum trail anywhere on the mountain, for the most comfortable hikes, tailor your hike to the season. Winter and early spring might be best spent on Diablo's north face, where waterfalls gush downhill during the wettest months of the year. When spring rolls around, I like the southern slopes of Diablo. With lots of grassland and sunny chaparral, hikes like this one, starting at Curry Point, are great treks for wildflower lovers. When I last hiked here in May the grass had already dried to a crisp, but there were plenty of Mariposa lilies, lupines, and yellow fairy lanterns blooming, as well as shrubs of bright pink chaparral pea and white chamise in bloom. In summer and autumn these trails are sun-baked and hot; you'll probably be happier hiking somewhere with cool breezes and some shade.
