Big Basin State Park
Skyline to the Sea Trail to Berry Creek Falls
by Jane Huber, BayInsider contributor

Big Basin Trail Stats
County: Santa Cruz
Nearest City: Davenport
Distance: 12 Miles
Elev. (low/high): 20/400 ft.
Difficulty: Moderate

Directions to Trailhead

Description
This 12-mile out-and-back hike traces Waddell Creek north to its confluence with Berry Creek, then easily ascends to Berry Creek Falls. You'll begin at the ocean, on a fire road bordering a marsh, pass under some coast live oaks, bisect a small farm, and walk along Waddell Creek. Gradually Skyline to the Sea enters a forest of redwood, tanoak, and Douglas fir, with pockets of alder, buckeye, and maple near the creek, and as the trail pushes into the heart of Big Basin, the forest thickens. The last .5 mile or so to the falls is an intimate and serene experience on a hiking-only path. Berry Creek Falls invites a long stare from an observation platform at its base, where rushing water drowns all other sounds. You can stretch this already long hike even further by continuing uphill past Berry Creek Falls to Silver, Cascade, and Golden Falls, an additional 2 mile commitment.
