Course lowdown
San Geronimo is the most challenging public course in Marin County. There are two starkly different nines here tucked into the foresty country of West Marin. The front nine, with seven of nine holes on the south side of Sir Francis Drake Blvd., is a good warm-up.

All the way out from the clubhouse you'll find straight, classically lined golf holes, with a few lay-up tee shots but nothing too tricky.

After lunch, however, you're in for a completely new experience. The back nine, which was cut from beautiful hillside land on the north side of Drake, features major elevation changes, blind tee shots, water, and some truly difficult holes.

Conditions are extreme. In the wet, wet winter, San Geronimo is a mud bog. In the heat of summer, the greens are some of the fastest around. While it's a public course and only 45 minutes from San Francisco, San Geronimo isn't usually as crowded as some of the other munis. And you might see some very interesting wildlife crawling through this rustic track, i.e. snakes, mountain lions, and high-handicap golfers. It's an oldie but a goodie: score on the front, pray on the back.
