Course lowdown
Walking through the Presidio Golf Course is a walk through San Francisco history. For more than a century, the tree-lined track only minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge was used only by the military and a small private club, whose stately clubhouse still provides the backdrop for the ninth green. The golf course is now in the hands of the National Park Service, run by Arnold Palmer's management company, and available to everyone in San Francisco.
As a result, the Presidio is a notoriously populated course that can often take a while to play. But it's worth it.
While it's not a particularly long course, Presidio shares with its private San Francisco neighbors (Olympic Club, San Francisco GC, Lake Merced) the classic San Francisco old style layout -- straight, tight holes running back and forth next to each other, making perfect use of a compact piece of land. Presidio is also famous for its vintage San Francisco weather, which is as unpredictable as your score will be if you experience it.
Presidio is the oldest golf course in San Francisco and has hosted rounds by many famous people over the years, including Babe Ruth.
