While the natural surroundings of Oakhurst are beautiful, with the imposing Mt. Diablo staring down at almost every fairway, the rest of the course looks like it was made by some evil golf wizard in a laboratory and then dropped in the serene hills above Walnut Creek and Concord. Oakhurst has sloped fairways, water galore, uniquely crafted sandtraps, and more barrancas, canyons, and other types of lateral hazards than the average layout.
The semi-private, upscale track also has homes, lots of homes, making some of the fairways pretty narrow. And the slope ratings of 138 from the tips (black tees) and 132 from the 6-14 handicap tees (gold) warn you right away that this is no easy walk in the park.
Because it is situated on the side of a hill, Oakhurst drains well in the wet winter and wreaks havoc on golfers in the summer with sun-baked fairways and lightning-fast greens.
The 18th hole is a golf course in itself. You'll need to hit a perfect layup shot and then make a long carry of a canyon to have any chance of making par.
