Course lowdown
The name Lone Tree Golf Course doesn't make sense.
There are plenty of trees here, many of which you might encounter during the course of a surprisingly challenging and pleasantly inexpensive round.
But there are plenty of things about the course that do make sense. Lone Tree, like many $100 "semi-private" courses, is well-maintained, sits overlooking a lake, and has plenty of houses dotting the nearby landscape. The houses are shiny, brand-new examples of the nomadic expansion of San Francisco suburbia that has transformed the once-remote delta town of Antioch into another Bay Area bedroom community. Which makes Lone Tree a soon-to-be-jammed muni. But don't worry about that now.
Unlike many of the upscale daily fee courses, it's reasonable and worth every penny in quality. There's nothing private about it. You won't see PGA Tour fairways and country club greens, but the fairways are among the best in the Bay Area for the cheap green fees ($15-$25) and the greens are a lot better than you'd expect.
Also, unlike many overpopulated Bay Area MUNI tracks, this one won't take you six hours to play on a weekend. The staff is on top of things and will make sure the pace of play moves along. And it's a par 73, so you get an extra stroke to play with.
