Sequoia and Kings Canyon are managed under one roof. This sprawling 736,980-acre area hosts a lot of top-notch backcountry camping. North, south, east, or west, it's endless rivers, meadows, gorges, and canyons.

Sequoia and King's Canyon are also havens for the world's largest living things: The Great Sequoia. These enormous red-barked trees reach heights of nearly 300 feet. The largest, General Sherman, is over 100 feet around at its base -- definitely something everyone should see before they die. Sequoia is also home of Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the United States outside Alaska.

The only road access to the Sequoia and King's Canyon is from the west. Five campgrounds are open for car camping. Crystal Springs, Azalea and Sunset Camps are all close to the Grant Grove Visitor Center in the north. Lodge Pole and Doris Camps require reservations. Use metal lockers to store food away from bears. Know that there is a 14-day limit on camping in the parks between June 14 and September 15.

Getting there
From Fresno, follow Route 180 into the park to the Grant Grove Visitor Center.
