Hike Point Reyes

Once you're tired of rugged dunes, oceanside cliffs and wide beaches, meander a bit inland, through forests of pine, fur and oak. That's where you might run into elk or deer. This area of Marin County's coast has everything.

Thirty-seven species of land mammals make their homes in Point Reyes. Marine mammals spend a lot of time along the shoreline, as well. Some 45% of the bird species in all of North America have been sighted in Point Reyes at one time or another. No, there's no shortage of wildlife here.

Of the park's three campgrounds, Sky Camp, a bit inland yet with a view to the ocean, is the closest one to the Bear Valley Visitor Center: about a 1.7 mile hike in.

Soon after the rainy season, between March and May, drive down to Alamere Falls, which crashes from 40 feet above the sea. Alternatively, pitch a tent at the popular Coast Campground nearby.

Getting there
Follow Sir Francis Drake Blvd. west to Olema. Take a right on Hwy. 1, very briefly, and turn left on Sir Francis Drake Hwy. heading north. In less than one mile, turn left at the sign that says "Seashore Information."

Golden Gate Transit can also get you to Point Reyes: (415) 923-2000.
