Pfeiffer is a small park. Just 800 acres. But anyone whos been there knows that 800 acres on the Big Sur Coast goes a long way. Lots of trees grow in this park, like redwoods, conifers, oaks, sycamores, cottonwoods, maples, and more. There's also quite a spread of critters -- wild boars, raccoons, skunks, and several species of birds.

The hiking loops are photogenic as all get-out, and they'll get you to grand overlooks of the Pacific and Big Sur Gorge.

This large public campground includes a restaurant and laundry facility. Campsites are along the Big Sur River. It may not be off the beaten path, but it's close to some beautiful hikes in the nearby Ventana Wilderness.

Getting there
Follow Hwy. 1 about 26 miles south of Carmel.
