Lassen Peak, the world's largest plug dome volcano at 10,457 feet, is a link in the volcano chain that encircles the Pacific Ocean -- the Ring of Fire. Hot springs and mud pots created by this waiting-to-burst volcano are part of the park's 106,000 acres of wild geography. Check them out on the well-known Bumpass Hell Trail and in the Sulphur Works section: two areas of naturally smelly terrain.

Aside from a few well-visited areas, crowds don't descend on the park, so you'll have lots of solitude. Since snow covers the ground for much of the year, plan your visit in Summer.

Lassen has seven campgrounds, most of which are free. Group camping reservations are necessary for two of them: Lost Creek and Juniper Lake campgrounds.

Getting there
Take I-5 North to Red Bluff and follow State Road 36 east 50 miles to the park.
