Weighing in at almost 81,000 acres, Henry Coe is one of the larger state parks in California. There's quite an impressive variety of terrain here, so you can take your pick: High ridges, bottomless canyons, forests, inspiring lookouts, lakes, oak savannas, and streams. If that isn't enough variety for you, you'd better find a different planet to live on.
The Ohlone and Great Valley Yokuts inhabited the area for centuries before the white folks (like Mr. Henry W. Coe) showed up with manifest destiny in their heads and ranching gear in their wagons. For years thereafter, the cattlemen had the run of the place.
Now there are over 250 miles of trails open to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Consider the 4.5-mile Middle Ridge Loop which includes some rigorous uphills, but gives a nice general view of the park. In other areas, the terrain is often very challenging -- steep and rugged. Seasonal weather can make overland travel difficult, so come well-equipped with clothing and maps.
You'll probably have this park to yourself -- crowding isn't much of a problem. There are 20 car camping sites, and 10 group camping locations. Call for reservations, just for good measure.
Getting there
From Hwy. 101 take the East Dunn Avenue exit from Morgan Hill and follow it east for about 14 miles to the park headquarters.
