It may be small on the map, but Andrew Molera State Park exhibits all the coastal beauty that Big Sur can muster. How often can you cram beaches, cliffs, meadows, untrammeled woodland, and a river into 4,800 acres? Not very. But it's been done here.
Another welcome surprise is how quickly you can get "lost" in the wilderness at Andrew Molera. Just a quarter-mile walk, and the campsites and parking lots might as well be in the next county. The trail system in the park is left over from when there was a functioning ranch there. Mountain bikers can find numerous, albeit short, rides.
Otherwise, you might want to take a crack at the Beach and Headlands Trail which follows the Big Sur River through some of the best riparian habitats in the area. One fork will take you to Molera Point, a particularly nice overlook.
About 55,000 visitors hit the park each year. Availability is rarely an issue here. When most of the other campgrounds in the Big Sur Area are booked up, it's a good bet that Andrew Molera will have a spot for you.
