South Bay: Harkins Ridge Loop
by Conan Tigard
BayInsider contributor

Harkins Ridge Loop Location: San Mateo County
Category: Dirt ride
Distance: 6.8 Miles
Elevation Gain/Loss: 1630 feet
Difficulty: Moderate
Riding Time: 1½ - 2 Hours
Directions

This is a ride that is practically all downhill followed by the climb out. The Whittemore Gulch Trail offers a 3-mile downhill, singletrack run to Higgins Purisima Road. The trail's soils can be heavily eroded, and it's closed in wet weather to bicyclists and equestrians. Redwood trees abound along Whittemore Gulch Trail and ferns hug the sides of the hills. The climb out is a grind, but the downhill is well worth it.

Turn-by-turn mileage log

Directions
Directions: From 101 and 92 in San Mateo, take 92 West. At the top of the hill, or mountain range, depending upon your point of view, turn left onto Skyline Boulevard. At approximately the 4½ mile mark, the parking lot for Purisima Creek Redwoods OSP appears on the right. The sign is a little hidden behind some bushes.
Comments
The entire ride is only about 7 miles, but the climb makes this a long ride. A lot of hikers and riders use these trails. This ride is a good one if you have the legs for climbing out. The descent is a blast and should not be missed. The climb is a little bit of a grind, but really isn't very difficult. There are a couple of short hills on the ascent that may give some trouble though ... they are a little steep.
