There's 70-odd miles of great coastline between the San Francisco Bay and Santa Cruz. Therein, plenty of great beaches await.

The vibe is different when you head south. First to go is the urban buzz that you can't *quite* escape in San Francisco proper. And the terrain is a lot more friendly than what you might find in Marin, where the mountains give rise to winding, somewhat-difficult-to-navigate roads.

Surfing is bigger when you head south, too. The San Mateo coast is home to a number of great surf spots, including the world-famous big-wave mecca, Mavericks, where Santa Cruz local Darryl "Flea" Virostko claimed $10,000 for riding the world's biggest waves this winter.
